There are a number of different waxes available for making candles and melts but at hulu we choose to make all of our candles, melts and melt bars with vegan friendly soy wax.
We chose to work with soy because it is a natural product. It is made from the oil of the soy beans. The beans are processed and made into flakes before being pressed to extract the oil. Next a process called hydrogenation changes fatty acids from unsaturated to saturated, altering the melt point and making it solid when cooler. It is then perfect for making candles without the need for paraffin. The leftover husks from the process are not wasted, they are used as nutritious animal feed. The animals then help to fertilise the soybean fields...
As well as the natural advantages of soy it has other key benefits. A soy candle burns much more cleanly. There are many studies and articles about the toxins produced by burning paraffin indoors, its a road that we are just not going to go down at hulu! Soy wax has a lower melting point than paraffin wax resulting in a longer lasting candle for your money. It can be little more difficult when it comes to 'scent throw', or getting the candle to release lots of fragrance while burning, but with good testing we can make an excellent and eco-friendly scented candle.
In summary, soy wax is natural, biodegradable and renewable. It is excellent to work with, clean burning and holds lots of fragrance. It is vegan friendly and cruelty free. That is why we love soy wax.
Soy candles create a wonderful ambience. Nothing compares to that glow from a flame and the embrace of a scent that wraps itself around you. It is vital to de-stress and unwind in today's busy modern world and we are all becoming more and more aware of self care and our well being. Enjoying soy candles and bathing are great way to help you relax peacefully in your home.
We have worked really hard to make your soy candles and there are a few things that you can do to get the most out of them.
The first burn – The first time you light your soy candle let it burn for at least two hours and up to four. You should see the wax melt right to the edges of the container. This is called the 'melt pool'. From there on you can burn them for a couple of hours at a time. If you want to fragrance your home for longer we suggest rotating your candles so each one doesn't burn for too long.
Trim the wick – Trim the wick to a quarter inch or five millimeters before each burn. This will prevent a large flame and excessive soot, even with soy wax candles and other natural wax candles. If you do not have a wick trimmer then nail clippers are preferable to scissors.
Avoid draughts – Burn your soy candle away from draughts or vents. The flame should stand up quite still which will result in a nice slow and even burn which in turn will result in good fragrance release and a longer lasting candle.
Keep your candles out of reach of children and away from flammable materials like curtains. Never leave a burning candle unattended. See more on our candle safety page.

You may have looked at our products and thought they are lower in price than similar brands. But why is this? Well Hulu is a small business based in a home studio. We make simple, elegant soy candles using high quality natural wax loaded with luscious fragrances. We have minimal overheads and it is reflected in our prices.
We do not have a shop or any employees. We minimise our packaging and just send our products out in recycleable packaging and that is what keeps our costs down. After all, it was a great smelling candle you wanted right?
We are small and we are environmentally friendly. We charge a fair price for great soy candles and soy wax melts. The Hulu family just keeps growing as customers keep coming back for more after their first purchase.
Relaxation
There is no denying that candles are great for relaxation – whether they are burning in the treatment room at a massage or adorning the edges of your bubble bath, they’re the go-to little self-care tool. The light they provide is a warm and natural glow, not like the harsh artificial light of shops and office spaces that we are used to. The gentle flickering movement is soothing and mesmerising. They are often infused with calming essential oils. And when you close your eyes, the little sporadic crackles can transport you to a soft rug by a grand fireside, or to stargazing in the forest at night beside a blazing campfire.
With these simple sensory pleasures, candles can help create an atmosphere of calm and well-being that can help to reduce anxiety, alleviate stress and encourage a good night’s sleep.
Meditation
So you are nice and relaxed and in the mood to take things one step further. Many people use candles in visualisation, gratitude rituals and meditation. In fact, there is a whole purification method in certain forms of yoga called Trataka, where staring at the candle flame helps you to quiet the mind, achieve a meditative state, visualise your thoughts – and supposedly bring energy to the third eye to promote physic ability.
Emotional comfort/familiarity
Whilst I was doing a little reading around the subject, I came across a lovely piece that linked our love for candles with their traditional, historic and religious associations. Light is the symbol for goodness, purity, life, where darkness has typically been a symbol of fear and death, and so the candle became established as a positive symbol in rituals and traditions in just about every culture across the world.
We burn them to represent life and joy at birthdays and celebrations; we burn them during prayer and worship to represent our faith, our souls, our chosen God; we burn them to remember our lost loved ones through light instead of sorrow; we burn them in vigils to guide lost souls home.
So now, even if we are not actively burning a candle for one of these reasons, we may still feel the comfort and love that is associated with these things and subconsciously rooted within us.
Health
Candles are used in a variety of ways to promote health. Have you tried a Hopi ear candle treatment? A traditional, natural therapy designed to remove toxins and wax from the ear, it is alleged to help reduce stress and tension headaches, as well as aid with conditions such a tinnitus, sinusitis and hay fever.
You can use candles to help realign specific chakras. And of course, all the things I have mentioned above – relaxation, meditation, comfort – are great for your mental health and overall well-being.
Why soy candles are better
That brings me to the type of candles you are using, because if you are burning traditional paraffin wax candles, they are going to undo all your good work – they might be cheap but they are pretty toxic and wont do your lungs (or your paint/wallpaper, whilst we are at it), any good. Beeswax (which is rather expensive!) and soy wax candles are the better choice if you want all the benefits, without the toxins.
Nothing beats the gentle glow from a scented candle.
Our reed diffusers are made with a vegetable based carrier. They are made using the carrier and fragrance, both of which are vegan friendly. The bottles can be recycled after use making these another eco friendly product. Each diffuser comes with six high quality reeds and if you turn them every now and then these reed diffusers will sit and throw out fragrance for a long time.
They are great in a bathroom or the entrance to your home and compliment our range of soy candles.

Some people may turn their noses up at fragrance oils claiming they are not natural and therefore not as 'good' as pure essential oils. Modern fragrance oils, like any synthetic product, are closely monitored by governing bodies and organisations.
When it comes to fragrances the IFRA is monitoring everything. Ingredients used in perfumes, soaps and bath products would not be certified and available for use if they had not been rigorously tested and examined. All reputable fragrance manufacturers and suppliers adhere to the IFRA global code of practice.
At Hulu we use fragrance oils in our soy candles and melts and essential oils in our bath salts and feel that both have a place within our business. Fragrance oils release their scent so beautifully when used with soy wax and using fragrance oils opens up the world of unique scents that are available.
All fragrances that we use come with a conformity certificate and a safety data sheet that we use to produce our CLP labels, a legal requirement. All of our fragrances are vegan and cruelty free.
Fragrance oils carefully measured and ready for use.
First of all we stick our wicks into the containers. Every single one is placed by hand and the jars are gently warmed while we melt our soy wax. When our wax is ready we blend our fragrance in before pouring each candle carefully. Each candle must be filled precisely and the wicks are then set into place and checked a few times as the wax begins to harden to ensure they are central. The wicks are then carefully trimmed, one by one, and the jars given a good wipe to make sure they look sparkling. Labels and CLP labels are then placed onto each soy candle then they go into stores to cure for a period of time.
Every step of the manufacturing process at Hulu is carried out by hand and in small batches so the end product definately earns the 'handcrafted' badge.
